Our top 3 ‘Mocktails’ for a healthier January

Let’s face it, Christmas is usually a time when most people over-indulge and, if you’re anything like us, with the year we’ve just had, we may have even overdone it a bit more than usual. Fear not! January is the perfect time to think about giving the booze a break and give your body a bit of an immune system-boosting detox.

For a general detox, why not try drinking warm water with lemon or a fresh ginger tea every morning (that’s homemade ginger tea, not just dunking a herbal teabag in some hot water!).  Make sure you eat lots of fruit and veggies as well - the more colourful, the better and please, stay away from the Christmas chocolate stash!  If you’re in tier 4 like us and you aren’t able to share the love with colleagues or friends, put them somewhere out of sight for at least a couple of weeks.

If you’re not a fan of mocktails, then we suggest that you try our delicious top 3 as listed below - hopefully you will be converted!

Our Top 3 'Mocktails'

3. Ginger Pomegranate Sparkler - This is an American recipe, but we promise that the taste is amazing (we have also tried it with the addition of blueberry gin – it was a bit odd). You can buy Kombucha from a health food shop or at the time of writing, Waitrose also sells it. We also like to blend the blueberries for fresh juice and use plain pomegranate juice, again available from supermarkets or health food shops - https://tastybalancenutrition.com/recipe/ginger-pomegranate-sparkler-mocktail/

2. Nojito - Yes, it’s the non-alcoholic Mojito! It’s very easy to make and mint is fabulous for easing any digestive issues that all of that rich Christmas food may have given you.  We like this American recipe, but we use soda water instead of Sprite Zero - https://www.skinnytaste.com/nojito/

1. The Virgin Mary – Our top mocktail is a non-alcoholic twist on the traditional Bloody Mary, this is packed with antioxidants such as tomato, lemon and celery. We would recommend adding a hit of fresh ginger and a pinch of garlic powder to warm things up.  If you’re not sure how to make it, this is our favourite recipe from The Spruce Eats - https://www.thespruceeats.com/virgin-mary-mocktail-recipe-760925

We hope that the above will inspire you to do something a bit different for a gentle, healthy start to 2021. At the end of the day, you could just throw some berries, banana and apple in a blender, add some ginger and a healthy pinch of turmeric and enjoy a delicious, healthy smoothie.  Whatever works for you.

We wish you all a Happy New Year!
